Undergraduate Research

We believe that undergraduate research experiences are an important way for students to learn about the profession they have chosen. We encourage all students to seek out opportunities to participate in research, and we offer several unique research opportunities at Truman.

Scholarships in Mathematics and Computer Science Program

SMACS is an NSF funded scholarship program in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department. We offer scholarships to Math and Computer Science majors, as well as Incentive scholarships to non-majors to encourage them to take more math/CS classes.

Mathematical Biology Program

Organizers:
  Jason Miller millerj@truman.edu
  Jon Beck jbeck@truman.edu
  Michael Kelrick mkelrick@truman.edu
Website: http://mathbio.truman.edu/

A group of faculty and students from biology and from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science are teaming up to explore opportunities for study that exist at the intersection of the biological and mathematical sciences. This hot field (or intersection of fields) is often referred to as mathematical biology, and is of growing importance to pharmaceutical, agricultural, medical, and research institutions.

In addition to offering courses, a minor, and a summer research program at Truman, the organizers of the Mathematical Biology Program are working to entice regional bioscience firms and research institutions into supporting this activity by providing speakers, tours of their facilities, summer research internship opportunities, and such.

The Next STEP

Website: http://step.truman.edu/

The Next STEP at Truman State University is an innovative, exciting program designed to enrich the undergraduate curriculum through meaningful student/faculty interactions and research endeavors. By promoting cultural and curriculum change, The Next STEP is working to increase the number of students who complete a baccalaureate degree in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines and better prepare them for the future that lies ahead. The program is a collaborative effort between Truman and Metropolitan Community Colleges in Kansas City, St. Charles Community College and Moberly Area Community College.

Competitions

William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition

Every year, undergraduate mathematics students from the US and Canada compete in the Mathematical Association of America's (MAA) William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. Each team is given several very difficult problems to solve in a day of work. Contact Dr. Erickson erickson@truman.edu for more information about participating.

Mathematical modeling competition

The Missouri section of the Mathematical Association of America hosts a math modeling competition each year. Truman is a regular participant, often sponsoring two student teams for the event. Teams are not limited to mathematics majors, and often include computer science students or students from other disciplines. Historically, we have been very competitive, besting many of our neighboring schools. If you are interested in the modeling team, contact Dr. Steve Smith sjsmith@truman.edu.
